i am flying from usa to narida airport from may 14 till the 23rd (not much time). i most want to go to see the monkey park which i...
...think is in Nagano (Jigokudani Monkey Park), 1 or 2 ryokans, and see old world japanese living (in other words not large modern cities. so in the remaining few days, is there anything like this nearby so that we don't waste a day travelling. thank you.
If you are going to Nagano, the best place to go to see old world japan is Shirakawago. they have many Gassho-style houses to see. It also might be possible to stay in one, but this I am not sure about. I was only there for a day.
That part of Japan is very famous for onsens. Here are the particular ones that I have been to: Yudanaka Onsen, Shibu Onsen, Kambayashi Onsen and Shiga Kogen.
If you can, hire a car while you are there. It is much easier to travel that way then by public transportation.
I recommend doing it for 1-2 days. It is a wonderful place to drive around.
I am living in Nagano. Jigokudani is close to Yudanaka onsen, Shibu onsen and Kanbayashi which the other guy answered. If you like onsens (hot springs), Maguse onsen might be good. I mean it's very open outside onsen in the mountains and it can be a quite experience if you can take a bath naked outside. I am not sure how to get there, maybe by bus?? Maguse onsen isn't that close to Jigokudani, however, I can say the direction is kinda same from Nagano city.
Hope you will have a good time in Nagano. Cheers.
